Our understanding of mental health concerns

At Foothills Therapeutic Services, we take a thoughtful and non-pathologising approach to mental health concerns. Rather than relying on labels that may carry stigma, we focus on working holistically with your unique circumstances, experiences, and needs. While a formal diagnosis can be helpful in some cases, it is not always necessary or appropriate for meaningful therapeutic work.

We understand that emotional distress is experienced and expressed in many ways, and that individuals often develop

creative strategies to cope. For example, repetitive behaviours—such as checking doors are locked multiple times—can be a way of managing anxiety.

Some coping mechanisms serve us well, while others may no longer be effective or supportive. In some cases, certain patterns of coping may align with diagnostic categories, but our focus remains on understanding and supporting you as a whole person, rather than reducing your experience to a label.

Living a Life of Choice

Regardless of a person’s experiences and situation, we believe that people are able to overcome their difficulties and can go on to live the life they choose. Some people refer to this as recovery – ‘recovery of a life and to fully participate in communities.’

At Foothills Therapeutic Services we deliver a diverse range of therapeutic services to meet the unique needs of each person we work with.
