Couples & Family Therapy
Relationship therapy involving significant others can play a vital role in reducing distress experienced by individuals. By engaging in this therapeutic process together, participants are encouraged to cultivate greater self-compassion as well as compassion for their loved ones. As individuals become more understanding and empathetic towards themselves and each other, the overall experience of distress often diminishes, creating a more supportive and nurturing environment for everyone involved.
Family or relationship therapy can include any combination of two or more people—such as a parent and child, grandparents and grandchildren, siblings, friends, or romantic partners—depending on what is needed. The primary goal is to foster open and more productive communication among those involved. By facilitating these conversations, family therapy aims to support effective problem-solving, promote deeper understanding and compassion, and strengthen the family’s ability to support each individual member.
The therapist maintains a non-judgemental and unbiased stance, acting as a facilitator rather than taking sides. The focus is on the relational space between people, with the intention of nurturing and enhancing the relationships. Through this collaborative process, individuals are encouraged to better recognise both their own needs and those of their loved ones, supporting a shared movement toward a more satisfying and rewarding relationship.

How Do I Know?
When Should I See a Therapist
Couples or family therapy at Foothills Mental Health and Wellbeing can begin in many ways, for example:

When the parties recognise that they have issues or concerns they would like to work through together with the assistance of a third party.

An individual comes for therapy and uncovers issues that necessitates the presence of both parties to work through.

Where a separation or divorce is pending, and one or both individuals want to ensure they have done their best to preserve the relationship and their family.

Before getting married or other significant commitments, to ensure both parties understand one another and the commitment, they are entering into.

One of the parties attends therapy at the request of the other, allowing them to receive individual therapy that they otherwise may have been reluctant to seek.
A Warm & Supportive Environment
Therapy sessions all take place in a warm and supportive environment, where people can express themselves freely in a safe, non-judgmental and confidential space.
